For those that are interested in that sort of thing here's a brief overview of my work so far:After dropping out of Art College in 1975 I became a full time freelance photographer in 1977. My first paid job was shooting Gloria Mundi, for Rod Smallwood (who went on to become the manager of Iron Maiden) for which I was paid a whopping £30. I remember shooting them in Dingwalls the night Elvis died. I worked mainly though for the now defunct magazine Sounds. I used to shoot a bit of everything for them from Blondie to Judas Priest.Staff writer Geoff Barton started giving me commissions to do the bands he liked, which were rock, before it became heavy metal. Geoff came up with the very dumb idea of starting a new movement called NWOBHM, short for New Wave of British Heavy Metal. |

He would drag me around the country shooting such delightful new and unsigned bands as Raven, Venom, Sledgehammer, Saxon, Def Leppard and from the East End of London Iron Maiden. Those were the good ones.Geoff had the idea of doing a year book. He wanted to call it Kerrang!, as in the sound of an open chord on a guitar being struck. We all laughed (I still had my sense of humour then!.) The publisher reluctantly agreed to do a magazine called a 'one shot', which means a one off magazine to see if it sells. No-one thought it would. |

Geoff asked what colour shots I had for the cover of the magazine but up to this point I'd only mainly shot in black and white. I'd shot AC/DC the week before at the Hammersmith Odeon. "That'll do" said Geoff and the rest, as they say, is history...During the 80's I became Mr Rock Photographer....I've never worked for one magazine and have always been and still am freelance.....Most people write to me and say aren't you lucky.......I do get to travel around the world, but my job isn't easy.....Getting the subject matter to co-operate is ninety percent of the task. The other ten percent is taking the picture.....Which is probably why I enjoy shooting landscapes!...... |
